Silicone lunch boxes are worth it — if you microwave
Silicone lunch boxes are worth the money if you reheat your lunch at work, but stainless steel is the better all-around buy if you want something that just doesn’t quit.
The big selling point is the combo of collapsible and microwave-safe. You can flatten an empty silicone container, toss it in your bag, and it won’t shatter, dent, or crack. And unlike plastic, food-grade silicone doesn’t have the chemical-leaching worry when you heat it up. That’s a real advantage if you eat leftovers.
The catch: it stains. Tomato sauce, curry, anything with turmeric — it’ll leave a mark. Silicone also holds onto smells, and cheap “silicone” isn’t always pure. You want to see “100% food-grade silicone” or you’re basically paying extra for fancy plastic.
Stainless steel is tougher, won’t stain, and never leaches anything, but it’s heavy, noisy in the office, and you can’t microwave it. Plastic is cheapest, but it scratches, stains, and eventually you’re eating out of something you don’t totally trust.
Get silicone for weekday leftovers, steel for everything else.
