Silicone lunch boxes can take it

Silicone lunch boxes are safe in the dishwasher and microwave, provided they’re made of pure, food-grade silicone with no metal parts.

The short version: yes on both. Food-grade silicone is heat-stable well beyond anything your microwave or dishwasher will throw at it — most are rated up to 220°C/428°F, and microwaves only heat the food, not the container. Unless yours has a metal rim, a steel latch, or a plastic lid, you’re fine to toss the whole thing in the dishwasher and nuke your leftovers in the same box.

One thing worth checking: the label. If it says “100% food-grade silicone,” you’re golden. If it’s silicone blended with other materials, or if it has a plastic lid or insert, that’s the part that will warp or leach. Also, lower-quality silicone can absorb odors or stain from tomato sauce over time — that’s cosmetic, not a safety issue, but it’s why “food-grade” matters.

Bottom line: buy decent silicone and stop hand-washing. Just pop the lid off before microwaving.
