Silicone wins for freezer meal prep
Most lunch boxes can handle the freezer, but silicone and #5 plastic will outlast glass through repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
Glass works, but it’s the diva of the group. Tempered or borosilicate glass is technically freezer-safe, but the real enemy is thermal shock — going straight from freezer to hot oven or pouring hot food into a frozen container. That’s what cracks it, not the cold itself. Glass also gets brittle when frozen and shatters if you drop it. If you go glass, let it thaw in the fridge first and never blast it with heat.
Plastic is the practical workhorse. Look for #5 polypropylene or a “freezer safe” label. Those handle repeated freezing fine. What you want to avoid are thin deli containers — they get brittle and crack after a few cycles. Rigid, thicker PP containers are cheap, light, and survive being dropped on a kitchen floor at 7am.
Silicone is the quiet winner. It flexes, so it never cracks, pops frozen portions out like ice cubes, and collapses down when empty. The downsides: it’s floppy to fill and doesn’t stack well. But for pure freeze-thaw abuse, nothing else comes close.
Skip stainless steel for this — it won’t crack, but food sticks and freezer-burns worse, and you can’t microwave it. Whatever you pick, leave headroom for food expansion and don’t slam hot leftovers into the freezer.
