SJTW is the extension cord you actually want.

Yes. The SJTW rating tells you the cord is built for outdoor use and can handle some abuse.

Here’s what the letters mean, because nobody remembers them:

  • S = Service cord (600V, standard duty)
  • J = Junior (lighter gauge, still tough)
  • T = Thermoplastic insulation (flexible, resists heat)
  • W = Weather-resistant (UV, moisture, cold)

What matters to you: the “W.” Without it, the cord is indoor only. With it, you can run the string lights in the rain, power the miter saw on a damp job site, or leave it coiled in the garage without the jacket cracking in winter.

Cheap indoor cords will get brittle, crack, and short out outdoors. SJTW cords cost maybe $5–10 more but last years instead of months.

Don’t overthink it. If you need to use a cord anywhere that isn’t a climate-controlled living room, get SJTW.
