Skip the $5 lunch box. Spend it wrong and you'll buy twice.

The best budget lunch box under $15 is actually two cheap things: an insulated bag and a leakproof container bought separately.

One-piece lunch boxes at that price are a gamble. You’ll get a bag with thin foam and a plastic tray with a lid that pops open in your backpack. Insulation and leakproofing are engineering, not magic. A vacuum-insulated steel jar keeps soup hot, but it’ll cost you $18+ unless you catch a sale. A cheap plastic container with rubber gaskets and swing latches can be leakproof if you click it shut right, but it won’t keep anything hot.

So split the budget. Spend $8-10 on a container with a serious silicone seal—Sistema-style click-lock ones are decent, or a no-name stainless food jar if you want hot meals. Spend the remaining $5 on a simple foldover bag with a reflective interior. That combo performs about 80% as well as a $40 kit, and the failure points are cheap to replace.
