Skip the built-in dressing well

Skip built-in dressing wells. A wide salad container plus a separate leakproof sauce cup keeps greens crispier than anything with a little indentation in the lid.

Those built-in dressing wells sound great, but most are shallow depressions in the lid or a small compartment right in the middle of the bowl. They leak at the seal, they don’t hold enough dressing, and you’re eating around them all lunch. “Built-in” usually means “extra place for a failure.”

The one exception is the Bentgo Salad Container, which has a separate leakproof dressing cup in its own slot above the greens. It works fine. But you don’t need a specialty container. A 2-oz sauce cup or a tiny Mason jar with a tight lid, tucked into a big Pyrex or Rubbermaid container, does the same job. The real moves are: dry your lettuce completely, keep the dressing in its own cup, and store crunchy toppings separately until you’re ready to eat.

The goal isn’t a container with a well. It’s a barrier between wet and dry.
