Skip the citronella candle

Not really.

Citronella has a reputation as a natural insect repellent, but the science is thin. It can mask the scents that attract biting insects like mosquitoes and gnats, but only at close range and for a short time. Once the oil dissipates—which happens fast—you’re back to being a target.

Studies show citronella works okay for about 20–30 minutes. That’s it. And it’s much weaker than DEET, picaridin, or even lemon eucalyptus oil. Worse, the candles you buy at the store barely release enough citronella to matter. The smoke might help a little, but that’s more from the smoke itself than the scent.

If you like the smell and want a tablescape accessory, go ahead. But if you’re trying to avoid bites, use a real repellent. Future you deserves better.
