Skip the clips. Get a magnetic latch.

A magnetic latch is the easiest thing for small hands — Yumbox and OmieBox both use them, and both are leagues ahead of anything with stiff plastic clips.

The enemy is clips and tight silicone seals. Kids under five just don’t have the thumb strength to pop a Bentgo-style clasp, and if you’re struggling with it as an adult, your kid has zero chance. I’ve seen 3-year-olds give up and just throw the whole box across the room. Not great.

Yumbox is my pick for preschool. It’s one flat tab that flips up easily, it’s leakproof, and it’s light enough for a small kid to carry. OmieBox is the same idea with a magnetic strap, and it keeps food warm — but it’s heavier and pricier, so more of a first-grade call. Bentgo Kids is popular, but those side clips are genuinely hard for small hands. Fine at 5+, not at 3.

Whatever you buy, test it yourself: if you need two hands or real effort, it’s wrong. The best lunch box is the one your kid can open on the first try.
