Skip the cooler. Just pack foods that don't care about the heat.

You don’t need a cooler for a good picnic lunch — you just need to choose food that’s happy at room temperature and pack it so it stays that way.

The trick is to stop thinking like a fridge and start thinking like a pantry. Cured meats, hard cheeses, nuts, dried fruit, bread, crackers, tortillas, nut butter, whole fruit, and veggie sticks all survive hours in a backpack completely fine. Hard-boiled eggs are fine too, for a day. The stuff that kills you is mayo, raw meat, creamy dairy, and anything that says “keep refrigerated” on the label after opening. Leave the chicken salad at home.

Packing matters more than you’d think. Use a lunch box with structure — a soft cooler bag without ice works fine, and even a sturdy box does the job. Put the squishable stuff on top, wrap sandwiches in paper or snack bags, and don’t overthink it. A banana will get bruised; a hard apple won’t. Pack accordingly.

One more thing: glass jars look nice but add weight you don’t want on a walk. Plastic or paper is your friend here.

Stock the pantry with the right stuff and you’ll never drag a soggy cooler around again.
