Skip the full winterization in mild climates.
Probably. If your winters are just a few days below freezing, you don’t need to drain, blow out lines, or shrink-wrap the thing.
In mild climates (think zone 8+ or coastal areas), the big risk is algae, not ice. So the smart play is: balance the chemicals, add a winter algaecide, lower the water level a few inches below the skimmer, and throw on a good cover. Run the pump a few hours a day on a timer unless the forecast says “hard freeze.” If it does dip below 32°F, just run the pump overnight to keep water moving—that’s usually enough to stop ice damage.
Draining an above-ground pool partially or fully is overkill down here. You’re just asking the liner to shift or the walls to cave in. Keep the water in, keep it clean, and you’ll open to a clear pool in spring.
You’re basically doing a light version of summer maintenance. No reason to make it hard.
