Skip the hard box unless you want a square kid
The most compact lunch boxes for a mini backpack or child are flat, flexible bento bags or slim insulated pouches, not rigid boxes.
Hard lunchboxes waste space. They’re basically cubes you’re trying to shove into a small bag, and that’s exactly the wrong shape. A soft-sided bento bag that lies fairly flat and flexes to fit is what you want. Something like a PackIt Mod or a basic insulated pouch with a thin profile works much better than any bulky hard case.
For a child specifically, pay attention to depth and weight. Bentgo Kids gets recommended a lot, but it’s still a bit thick for a mini backpack. I’d rather go with a slim fabric bento or a simple sandwich pouch with a fruit cup thrown in the side. Zipper closure beats a hard latch—kids can handle a zipper without dropping something.
Also, measure the actual backpack first. If it’s a true mini backpack, you want a lunch bag shaped more like a large envelope than a box. Check the depth of the main compartment before buying anything.
A flat lunch is easier to pack, easier to carry, and honestly, a kid will eat a flattened sandwich just as happily.
