Yes, a sleeve is better for both overheating and scratching.

Hard snap-on cases trap heat. The MacBook Air already runs warm because it has no fan, and adding a plastic or silicone jacket turns it into an oven. You'll get throttling, louder fan noise if you have a Pro, or just a slower laptop that feels hot to the touch. Soft silicone cases are slightly better but still block airflow around the hinge and bottom vents.

Sleeves protect the laptop from scratches and dings when you're carrying it, without interfering with cooling during use. Just slide it out when you're working. That's the whole point.

If you absolutely must have a case on while using it, look for something with vents or a minimalist design like the older Incase Hardshell  but honestly, the thermal trade-off isn't worth it. A thin neoprene or felt sleeve from Tomtoc or WaterField does the job without cooking your machine.

Your MacBook will thank you for the breath of fresh air.
