Skip the Latch Boxes. Get the Peel-Off Lid.
For a small child who can’t work latches yet, the best lunch box has no latch at all — just a lid they can pull or peel off.
The popular ones — Bentgo Kids, Yumbox — are cute, but their snap latches are exactly the thing your kid can’t open. Daycare teachers end up opening every box at lunch, which defeats the whole point of a “kid-friendly” lunch.
Look for a simple bento with a lid that just sits on or pops off, like LunchBots, or any container with a stretchy silicone lid. Those are basically foolproof: lift a corner, whole lid comes off, no fine motor skills required. Reusable silicone bags with a slider zipper (Stasher-style) are also a win — a zipper pull is way easier for little fingers than a latch.
Most toddlers can manage one of these by 2 or so, especially with a little practice at home. And if your kid still can’t get into anything by school, just send a no-lid bento tray. Hunger is a great motivator, but you don’t want the first test of it to happen in a cafeteria.
Toddlers don’t need a leakproof vault. They need food they can get to.
