Skip the plastic meal-prep containers. Get a glass bento box.
For adult meal prep with portion control, a glass bento-style container with three compartments is the best everyday choice.
Plastic containers seem cheaper, but they stain, warp, and collect smells after a few microwave rounds. Glass handles the heat, doesn’t hold last week’s curry, and lets you go from fridge to microwave without transferring anything — which is the whole point of meal prep.
The compartments matter more than you’d think. It’s not that they magically control portions; it’s that they stop the “well, it’s all mixed together anyway” slide into one giant bowl of everything. A good three-compartment box gives you protein, carb, and veg without the food touching. Aim for around 3 cups total capacity with compartments sized for real adult portions, not the kid-sized bento boxes.
The ones I’d actually buy: Prep Naturals 3-compartment glass if you want cheap and stackable. Glasslock if you want a lid that actually seals. If your office has no microwave, a stainless steel tiffin like LunchBots is the move — just know you’re eating cold.
One thing to check before buying: the lid seal. “Airtight” rarely means leakproof, and nothing ruins a lunch bag like a compartment of dressing wandering into your rice.
Future you deserves better than a stained plastic container.
