Skip the thin waterproof blankets. Get one with a sealed backing and sand pockets.
The ones that actually work are heavy-duty with a waterproof backing and corner pockets for sand.
The thin “waterproof” blankets you see everywhere are basically glorified picnic sheets. Water beads off the top, sure, but sand sticks to the fabric, and a light breeze turns the whole thing into a sail. Not useful.
What you want is a blanket with a sealed bottom layer — think a tarp or vinyl backing — so water from wet sand can’t soak through. Add sand pockets (four corners with pouches you fill with sand), and the blanket stays put even on a windy day. That combo keeps you dry, sand-free, and anchored.
Most of these come in a carry bag and cost around $30–50. Worth it.
Your beach day will be way less annoying.
