Skip the zipper. Get a latch.
The easiest toddler lunch box to open is one with a big flip latch — not a zipper, not a tight-sealing lid.
Zippers are the enemy. A two-year-old hasn’t got the fine motor strength to pinch a zipper pull and drag it around the corners. Even older kids struggle. You’ll end up opening it for them, which defeats the point.
What you want is a chunky latch that opens with one motion. Bentgo Kids is the safe default — the side clips are big and forgiving. PlanetBox’s magnetic closure is even easier; a one-year-old can flip it open with a finger, but it’s pricey. Test whatever you already own: if you can open it one-handed without pinching, your toddler can probably handle it.
Skip press-fit containers inside too. Pack in open compartments or squeeze pouches — those little round lids may as well be welded shut.
If you can open it one-handed without looking, they’ll have it figured out by lunch.
