Skip vinyl binders. Get polypropylene.

The quickest way to get a binder that survives daily use is to pick one made of welded polypropylene, not vinyl or paperboard.

Vinyl binders are the worst. They look tough but the plastic film peels off after a few months, especially at the corners and hinge. Cardboard binders tear at the spine when you set them down or toss them in a bag. Polypropylene is a different story — it’s flexible, doesn’t peel, and shrugs off repeated opening and closing.

When you’re looking, check the hinge area. The best binders are one-piece polypropylene with a welded or heat-sealed hinge — no fabric strip glued over the fold. That glued strip is the first thing to fail. Also, look for round rings (not D-rings if you want less stress on the cover)
