Soft beats cut when packing braces lunches

The trick is to pack soft foods that don’t need much chewing, then cut them into fork-sized pieces.

Cutting a sandwich into tiny squares still leaves hard crust and chewy bread. What matters more is the texture. Go with things that basically fall apart: pasta, rice, mashed potatoes, soft fruit like bananas or berries, cooked carrots, shredded chicken, scrambled eggs, yogurt, and soft cheese. Those are easy on the tender spots that braces rub against.

Also avoid the usual crunchy trap: chips, raw apples, nuts, popcorn, hard pretzels. They’re not just uncomfortable — they can bend wires or pop brackets off. If you want something snacky, think pudding, applesauce, or soft granola bars broken into pieces.

Keep it practical. A thermos helps for warm stuff like soup or mac and cheese. For cold things, an ice pack keeps yogurt and fruit safe. And cut everything into pieces about the size of a grape, so they can chew with their back teeth without opening wide.

Braces are temporary, but lunch doesn’t have to be boring. Just lean into anything you’d serve a toddler without a knife.
