Soft lunch bags beat hard bento boxes for throwers

The best lunch box for a toddler who throws or drops it is a soft-sided insulated bag with a zipper, packed with food in separate small containers.

Hard bento boxes look great, but they don’t survive impact well. The latches pop open, the plastic can crack, and you end up picking blueberries out of a car seat. A soft bag absorbs the drop, and even if it gets thrown across the kitchen, the actual food is protected inside its own containers.

You also want something that doesn’t hurt. A hard plastic lunch box thrown at a sibling is a weapon. A soft insulated bag is more of a mild suggestion.

Don’t fall for “drop-proof” marketing or spend big on an expensive brand. Get something cheap, wipeable, and easy to zip. You’re not buying a keepsake — you’re buying a thing your toddler is going to throw on the floor today.
