Yes. If the RAM is soldered, that’s all you get. There’s no slot to add more, no way to swap it out.

Manufacturers do this to save space and weight, mostly in ultrabooks and MacBooks. The trade-off is that you’re locked into whatever they put in at the factory. You can’t upgrade later if 8GB stops being enough.

Some laptops have a mix: soldered RAM plus one slot. That gives you a little flexibility, but the soldered portion still limits the minimum. If the soldered part is 8GB and you add an 8GB stick, you get 16GB total — you can’t go beyond the soldered amount unless you replace the whole board (usually not worth it).

So if you’re buying a laptop with soldered RAM, buy it with enough memory for the next 4-5 years. Future You will appreciate it.
