In most laptops, the CPU is either socketed (LGA) or soldered (BGA). Soldered RAM has nothing to do with that choice. You’ll find laptops with soldered RAM and a socketed CPU (rare, but exists), and you’ll find laptops with upgradeable RAM slots and a soldered CPU (common in ultrabooks). The two aren’t linked.

The real question is whether the CPU itself is soldered. If it is, you’re not upgrading it no matter what. If it’s socketed, you might be able to swap it — but even then, BIOS support, power delivery, and thermal limits often kill the upgrade. The soldered RAM is just a distraction.

So focus on the CPU socket type, not the RAM. Soldered RAM tells you the board is cheap to manufacture, not that the processor is trapped. But in practice, a laptop with soldered RAM is also likely to have a soldered CPU — because the manufacturer designed it to be disposable. That’s the correlation, not causation.

You want upgradeable? Look for laptops with both socketed CPU and replaceable RAM. Those are getting rare, though.
