Soldered RAM is slightly cheaper upfront, but the real cost is flexibility.

For identical specs — same RAM capacity and speed — a soldered RAM laptop will usually cost $50–$150 less than a socketed one. That’s because soldering is cheaper for the manufacturer: fewer slots, less board space, simpler assembly. They pass some of that savings to you.

But that’s where the good news ends. If you ever want more RAM later, you can’t. You’re stuck. The “savings” evaporate the moment your needs grow. With socketed RAM, you can upgrade in two years for maybe $50–100. With soldered, you buy a whole new laptop.

So if you know you’ll never need more than what’s in the spec sheet, go soldered and save a few bucks. If there’s even a chance you’ll want 32GB down the road, buy socketed now — or at least make sure the soldered model comes with enough capacity upfront.

Future you might thank you for avoiding the 16GB wall.
