Soldered RAM means you're stuck.
Yes, it’s way more complicated — and often impossible. If the RAM is soldered, you can’t upgrade at all. Buy 16GB from the start or pick a laptop with replaceable SO-DIMM slots.
Desktops are easy: pop open the case, swap sticks. Laptops are a different beast. Some are user-serviceable, but many manufacturers solder RAM to save space and make laptops thinner. Check the spec sheet before you buy. If it says “onboard” or “soldered,” that 8GB is forever.
If your laptop has slots, the upgrade is similar to a desktop — just smaller, more fragile connectors. Still doable with a screwdriver and patience. But if it’s soldered, there’s no fix. You’re buying a new machine.
Always check before you buy. Future You will thank you.
