Soldered RAM replacement exists. Avoid it.

Yes, a few independent shops and specialized services offer to desolder existing RAM chips and solder on higher-capacity ones. But you almost certainly shouldn’t use them.

The cost is the first problem. Expect to pay $150–$300 for the labor, plus the cost of the new RAM chips. On a laptop that probably wasn’t a flagship, that’s often more than half the value of the machine. And you still end up with a used, out-of-warranty laptop that now has a modified motherboard.

The second problem is risk. Reballing and re-soldering BGA (ball grid array) RAM is delicate work. Even good shops have a failure rate. If the new RAM doesn’t work, or the motherboard gets damaged, you’re out the service fee and the laptop. There’s no warranty that covers “we broke your laptop.”

For most people, the practical answer is: sell your current laptop and buy one with the RAM you need already installed. It’s cheaper, safer, and you get a fresh warranty.

This is not a mod. It’s a gamble with bad odds.
