Soldered RAM runs cooler, but you can't upgrade it.

Yes, soldered RAM has a slightly better thermal profile—less heat, less power draw—but the difference is tiny and never worth locking yourself into a laptop you can’t upgrade. Socketed RAM is still fine thermally.

The heat savings from soldered RAM come from removing the physical DIMM connector and the extra traces. We’re talking maybe 1-2°C at most under load. For 99% of laptops, that’s invisible. The real thermal enemy is the CPU and GPU, not the RAM. If a laptop has bad cooling, it’s not because of socketed RAM.

The upgrade question is the actual decider. Soldered RAM is permanently attached. If you buy 8GB now, you’re stuck with 8GB forever. Socketed RAM lets you swap in 16GB or 32GB later for cheap. In my experience, most people need more RAM within 3-4 years, not less heat. So unless you’re building a super-thin ultrabook where every millimeter and watt matters (and even then, they still use soldered RAM for space, not thermals), go socketed.

Don’t let a “cooler” spec sheet trick you into a dead-end machine.
