Technically yes, but practically no. Soldered RAM uses less power than socketed because it’s closer to the CPU and has fewer physical connections. That means slightly lower voltage and less heat. We’re talking milliwatts here—single-digit percentage differences in total system draw.

In a real-world laptop, that translates to maybe 5-10 extra minutes of battery life over a full charge. Socketed RAM loses a bit more power running through the slot contacts and longer traces, but you’ll never notice the difference in daily use.

What you will notice: soldered RAM can’t be upgraded or replaced. If your laptop has 8GB soldered and you need 16GB in two years, you’re buying a new machine. Socketed RAM gives you flexibility, repairability, and often better long-term value. The power savings aren’t worth the trade.

Choose RAM you can replace, not RAM that saves a watt.
