Soups belong in a thermos, not a lunch box
For soups and stews, the right answer is a wide-mouth vacuum-insulated food jar, not a plastic lunch box.
Even the best “leak-proof” boxes rely on plastic latches that can flex and pop under backpack pressure. A screw-on lid with a rubber gasket is a different level of seal — it’s the same principle as a water bottle. The Thermos Stainless King is the boring, reliable standard for this. Zojirushi’s food jar is also excellent, just pricier and a little more fragile.
Get the wide-mouth version so you can actually spoon into it. Stick with stainless steel inside, not plastic lines, because chili and stews stain. And if you’re carrying it loose in a backpack, toss it in a ziplock as a backup. Nothing is 100% idiot-proof, but a vacuum jar is the closest you’ll get.
Warm soup in a backpack is a luxury. Don’t ruin it by trusting a latch.
