St. John's Wort for SAD: effective but risky with other drugs

St. John’s wort can help with SAD, but the drug interactions are no joke.

It works like a weak SSRI — boosts serotonin, which is exactly what you need for seasonal affective disorder. Studies show it’s genuinely effective for mild to moderate depression, and a lot of people swear by it for the winter blues. The downside? It messes with liver enzymes (CYP450 system), which means it changes how your body processes a ton of medications.

Combining it with actual antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs) can cause serotonin syndrome — that’s the dangerous one. But also: it makes birth control less effective, can mess with blood thinners like warfarin, and reduces the effectiveness of statins, antihistamines, and some heart meds. Basically, if you’re on anything else, you need to check.

For SAD specifically, light therapy is safer and has zero drug interactions. St. John’s wort is a decent alternative if you’re not on other meds and want something herbal. But never assume “natural” means harmless.

Better to talk to your pharmacist than end up with a surprise pregnancy or serotonin storm.
