Stack and fold: the only way to win a tiny laundry room

The best way to declutter a small laundry area is to stack your washer and dryer vertically and install a wall-mounted drying rack above them or on the nearest free wall.

Stacking washer and dryer is the single biggest space saver. It turns two bulky floor rectangles into one tall column. Suddenly you have room for a hamper, a narrow shelf, or just breathing space. Almost all front-loaders are stackable – check your manuals, buy a stacking kit if yours didn’t come with one.

Then the drying rack goes on the wall – ideally right above the machines. That way the dripping stage happens directly over the washer or over a utility sink if you have one. When you’re not using it, it folds flat. No more tripping over a freestanding rack that takes up floor space. I’d recommend a stainless steel fold-down rack with plenty of bars (those wooden lattice ones warp over time). Mount it into studs or use heavy-duty toggle bolts – laundry rooms get humid and drywall alone won’t hold up.
