Stainless steel is the answer

Stainless steel insulated lunchbox is the way to go. It’s the only non-plastic option that actually keeps food cold for hours without turning your backpack into a science experiment.

Glass is too heavy and breaks. Ceramic is fragile. Bamboo looks cute but doesn’t insulate for crap. Steel with a vacuum-insulated double wall is the real deal — it keeps things cold like a thermos, just bigger and with compartments if you want them.

A couple things to check when you’re shopping. Make sure the lid seals properly, not just snaps but has a silicone gasket. That gasket is still silicone, not plastic, and it’s what stops the cold air from leaking out. Also look for one that comes with a separate ice pack insert or has room to throw a small one in. The insulation alone is good, but on a hot day the ice pack makes the difference.

Also, don’t overthink the “leak-proof” claims. Test it at home with water before you trust it in your bag. Stainless steel dents if you drop it, but it’ll outlast you.

Bottom line: get a vacuum-insulated stainless steel box with a good seal, add a small ice pack, and you’re done. You won’t go back to plastic.
