Stainless steel is the most eco-friendly lunch box material that comes closest to plastic’s durability, and it’s not even close.

Plastic is durable, I’ll give it that. But it’s made from petroleum, and eventually it ends up in a landfill or the ocean. Stainless steel gives you the same ability to get tossed in a bag, bumped around, and still protect your food — without the environmental guilt. It’s also endlessly recyclable, doesn’t leach chemicals, and easily outlives any plastic container you’ll buy.

Glass is a close runner-up for eco-friendliness, but it’s heavy and shatters. One dropped lunchbox and you’re sweeping up your salad. Bamboo looks eco-friendly and is renewable, but it’s more likely to crack or warp over time, and it picked up a weird smell once it gets scratched. Plant-based plastics like PLA sound great, but they only compost in industrial facilities, and they’re not nearly as tough.

So if you want the greenest material that can still take a beating, go with stainless steel. It’ll outlive your plastic containers, and you won’t have to worry about microplastics in your sandwich.

Your future lunches deserve better than a fossil-fuel lunchbox.
