Stainless steel is the only lunch box that truly survives

Stainless steel lunch boxes are the most durable option and will shrug off daily backpack drops that crack plastic containers. If you want something that will still look new after a year of abuse, skip thin plastic and flimsy soft bags.

Plastic boxes like typical bento containers are the usual suspects. They’re light and cheap, but they yellow, crack at the hinges, and the latches snap off after a few months of getting tossed around. Soft lunch bags are better, but the fabric can tear and the zippers are the weak point. There are rugged soft-sided options like Yeti and Carhartt that hold up well, but “most durable” still goes to hard-sided stainless steel.
