Stainless Steel Is the Work Bag Winner

Stainless steel is the better choice for a work bag—glass is heavier and can shatter, and steel keeps food just as fresh.

For freshness, the material barely matters. What actually matters is the lid. A good silicone or rubber seal that snaps shut will keep your food fresh in almost any container. Glass and stainless steel are both non-porous, so neither will absorb yesterday’s curry smell or react with acidic food. Forget the myth that one is “fresher” than the other.

Durability is where steel runs away with it. Drop a glass container on concrete and you’ve got shards in your lunch bag, on the sidewalk, everywhere. Stainless steel dents at worst. That one downside is enough, but steel is also lighter. If you’re commuting, you don’t need glass weight dragging on your shoulder all day.

Glass does have two real advantages: you can microwave it, and you can see your food. Steel usually means transferring to a plate or eating cold. If you’re a microwave-at-work person, that might matter. But the question was about a work bag—and steel wins that every time. Your bag and your lunch will both survive the commute.
