Yes, it’s safe to put a stainless steel lunch box in the freezer overnight. Stainless steel is non-porous, food-safe, and won’t crack or leach anything the way cheap plastic can. This is a completely normal thing to do.

Two small rules so you don’t wreck anything. First, don’t fill it to the absolute brim — liquids expand when they freeze. Leave a little headroom or you’ll pop the lid off. Second, if you’re going to run the whole container under hot water to thaw the food, don’t go straight from freezer to boiling water. Thermal shock can warp the metal. Cold to lukewarm is fine.

One honest note on the strategy itself: steel holds cold well, but it also picks up room heat fast once you’re out of the house. It works best if the food inside is already cold or frozen and the box is paired with a lunch bag. A frozen steel box sitting on a warm desk will sweat and gradually warm up just like anything else.

Also check the lid. If it’s plastic or silicone, it’s freezer-safe too, but the seal gets stiffer in the cold, so let it sit a few minutes before opening.

Freeze it, pack it, and don’t drop it on tile while it’s rock hard.
