Stainless steel lunch boxes don’t microwave

Stainless steel lunch boxes are a solid plastic-free option, but they are not microwave-safe — so you have to decide which matters more.

Metal and microwaves don’t mix. Put stainless steel in the microwave and you risk sparks, arcing, and a ruined oven. So no matter how nice the lunch box is, if you need to reheat your food in it, it can’t be steel.

If microwave reheating is non-negotiable, skip metal and get glass or ceramic containers. Pyrex or Weck-style glass jars are plastic-free and microwave-safe. Most come with plastic-free lids, though you may need to remove glass lids before heating.
