Stainless steel wins on smells and stains
Stainless steel lunch boxes are much better than plastic when it comes to stains and smells.
Plastic is porous. That means tomato sauce, curry, and garlic oil get into the microscopic scratches and hang around, even after washing. That’s why a plastic container that just held marinara smells like marinara for a month. Stainless steel is non-porous, so nothing really grabs onto the surface.
Steel also doesn’t scratch the way plastic does. Those scratches aren’t just ugly — they’re traps for food residue and, eventually, bacteria. With stainless steel, a quick wash handles almost everything. It’s also tougher and won’t warp in the dishwasher, which is a nice bonus.
The only part that can hold smells is the rubber gasket or seal on the lid. That happens on plastic too, so it’s not a reason to stick with plastic. If you’re choosing between the two just for stain and odor resistance, stainless steel is the clear winner.
You don’t want your lunch to taste like yesterday’s lunch.
