Stay 20 feet back from the rapids.

Pretty close, but don’t. Most island rapids in the St. Lawrence or similar areas have a few warning signs posted near popular access points, but nowhere near enough. There are almost never physical barriers. You can walk right up to the edge.

The problem is the rocks. Wet, slippery, sloped. A step too far and you’re in current that pulls you under fast. Even strong swimmers get killed every year. The signs are small, faded, or posted where you already walked past them.

A good rule: if the water is visibly churning or you hear a roar, you are too close already. Stay at least 20 feet back from the bank. That’s about six adult steps. No selfie is worth this.

The river doesn’t care about your vacation.
