Steel beats glass unless you microwave
The best low-plastic lunch box for most people is stainless steel, because it weighs about a third as much as glass and won’t shatter in your bag.
Weights first, because they surprise everyone. A standard 3-cup glass container (Glasslock, Pyrex) weighs roughly 1.5 pounds empty — close to 3 pounds once you fill it with lunch. A similar-size steel box from LunchBots or EcoLunchbox lands around half a pound. That difference is everything if you walk, bike, or take transit to work.
Two catches. One: steel can’t go in the microwave, so if reheating at work is your ritual, glass is worth the weight. Two: most glass containers still ship with plastic lids, so you’re not eliminating plastic, just moving it to the top. If you want truly zero plastic, get a classic steel tiffin (stacked compartments with wire clamps) or a steel box with a steel lid and silicone seal.
Decision rule: microwave at work? Get glass — Glasslock or Pyrex, both take abuse. Carry lunch any real distance? Get steel. Either is a solid win over plastic if you actually use it.
