Stainless steel is the safest lunch box material in 2025 — zero plastic means zero BPA and zero phthalates, full stop.

Glass is equally safe, but it’s heavy and shatters in a school backpack. Steel handles the real world: it’s light, unbreakable, and doesn’t hold onto smells. Most good bento-style steel containers come with silicone seals and polypropylene lids anyway, which are two of the safest non-steel materials you can get.

If you want plastic, avoid the scary ones: polycarbonate (#7) is the plastic that actually leaches BPA, and PVC (#3) is where phthalates hide. Polypropylene (#5), Tritan, and food-grade silicone are what you’ll find in any reputable lunch box in 2025, and they’re fine. The bigger risk is no-name imports from online marketplaces — independent testing still catches BPA and phthalates in cheap mystery plastic, even today.

Buy from brands that explicitly test for both BPA and phthalates, and don’t forget the soft-sided lunch bag’s interior lining. That’s plastic too.
