Stick and powder sunscreens aren't as good as lotion.

No, they’re not as effective—at least not on their own. The problem isn’t the formula. It’s the application.

You can’t apply a stick or powder as evenly or as thickly as a lotion. Most people end up with patchy coverage, missing spots, or applying too little. Studies show powder sunscreens, in particular, deliver much lower actual SPF than advertised because you’d have to cake it on to get the labeled protection. Sticks are better, but you still need to do multiple passes and press into the skin.

That said, they’re way better than nothing for reapplication over makeup. If you’re choosing between a powder sunscreen and skipping reapplication entirely, use the powder. Just know you’re probably getting SPF 15 or 20 from a “SPF 50” powder. And don’t forget your ears and neck.

They’re a convenience tool, not a replacement.
