Stitched edges are worth it. Fraying is fixable.
Yes, stitched edges last longer. And yes, you can fix frayed ones without buying a new mousepad.
Stitched edges are basically a hem for your mousepad. The fabric or rubber can’t peel apart because the stitching locks the layers together. Unstitched (or “cloth”) mousepads will eventually fray at the edges, especially if you drag your wrist over them or shove the pad into a bag. Stitched ones last years without issue.
If you already have a fraying pad, don’t toss it. The fix is simple:
- Clear nail polish – Paint a thin layer over the frayed edge. Let dry. It hardens and stops the thread from unraveling further.
- Fabric glue – Same idea, just a dab along the edge. Works better for thicker fraying.
- Heat seal – A quick pass with a lighter (carefully) can melt loose threads on synthetic pads. This one is risky – practice on an invisible corner first.
Whatever you do, don’t pull the loose thread. That just unravels more. Cut it flush with scissors, then seal.
Your mousepad doesn’t need to look like a battlefield.
