Stop drilling holes. Use sticky hooks and magnets.

Command hooks and magnetic strips are the easiest way to declutter a small hallway or mudroom without drilling – just stick and organize.

The trick is to use the right hook for the right job and put it in the right spot. For a hallway or mudroom, you’ve got vertical wall space, back of doors, and maybe the side of a cabinet or a metal door frame. Command hooks have weight limits printed right on the package – don’t ignore them. Light stuff like keys, leashes, hats, mail, or a single lightweight jacket? No problem. Heavy winter coats? Get the outdoor-rated heavy-duty hooks, but even then, keep it to one per hook.

Magnetic strips are your secret weapon for metal surfaces. Stick one on the side of a metal shelf, a filing cabinet, or inside a cabinet door. You can store scissors, tweezers, key rings, nail clippers, even small screwdrivers. If your door is metal, a magnetic strip on the inside of the door holds keys and small tools without any adhesive at all.

For the back of a wood door, use Command hooks sideways to hang umbrellas, belts, or scarves. A small magnetic strip won’t work on wood, but you can buy a Command brand magnetic board that sticks via adhesive. Or just stick a few hooks.

One pro tip: wipe the surface with rubbing alcohol before applying the adhesive strip. Let it cure 24 hours before hanging anything. That’s what makes them actually stay.
