Stop forcing a hard lunch box into your backpack

Hard lunch boxes fight you, but a soft-sided lunch bag folds flat, slides in easily, and actually fits a standard work backpack or tote.

Most standard backpacks are around 18" tall with a main compartment that’s 12" wide and 6-8" deep. A rigid box that’s 9x9x4 might fit, but it eats your whole day and leaves no room for a laptop, folder, or hoodie. Why bother? Soft lunch bags come in the same insulated styles, squish into leftover space, and won’t refuse to close.

If you’re stuck with a hard box, at least measure it against the inside of the bag. Then use it vertically (standing on its side) so the height isn’t wasted. Many bags also have a bottle pocket that will hold a thermos or a stack of Tupperware, freeing up the main compartment.

Buy a soft one. It’s the only real fix. Your back and your zippers will handle the commute better.
