Stop the clutter before it starts

Keeping your small home office from re-cluttering after you’ve installed a cable management tray and a vertical monitor stand comes down to three maintenance habits, not more gear.

The weekly five-minute reset. Every Friday (or whatever day works), spend exactly five minutes putting things back. That rogue pen. The charging cable that migrated. The sticky note that fell behind the monitor. You don’t need to deep-clean — just restore the baseline. Set a recurring calendar reminder. Do not skip this.

The one-touch rule for paper and small items. Everything that lands on your desk gets dealt with immediately or placed in its designated spot. Mail? Open, file, shred, or trash right then. That random USB stick? Plug it in, do whatever, then put it back in the drawer. No “I’ll deal with it later” piles. Later is where clutter is born.

The monthly cable check. Cable trays and vertical stands are great, but cables wiggle loose over time. Once a month, pop open the tray, zip-tie any slack, and make sure nothing is dangling where it shouldn’t be. Also check that the vertical stand’s base hasn’t become a catch-all for loose change and earbuds. That thing is a magnet.

The gear you bought (tray, stand) does the heavy lifting. But without these
