Store markers flat. Not up, not down.

Store markers horizontally to keep the ink at the tip and stop them from drying out.

The reason is simple: gravity works against you either way. Store them tip-up, and the ink settles away from the nib, leaving the tip dry and crusty. Store them tip-down, and you get the opposite problem — ink floods the tip, bleeds, and can leak into the cap. Horizontal keeps the ink evenly distributed along the reservoir so the nib stays saturated but not soaked.

If you’re a serious art marker person (Copic, Prismacolor, etc.), horizontal is the default recommendation for the same reason. Some folks store them tip-down briefly to re-wet a dried nib, but that’s a trick, not a storage strategy. For long-term storage, flat is the answer. Just make sure the caps are on all the way.
