Sun-protective swimsuits that don't scream "rash guard" exist — but you have to look for them.

Yes. You can get real sun protection (UPF 50+) in styles that look like normal swimwear — not a wetsuit or a surf instructor uniform.

The trick is that most brands marketing “sun protective” gear lean hard into the rash guard look: long sleeves, high necks, sporty colors. But a few companies make UPF-rated bikinis, one-pieces, and board shorts that pass for regular beachwear. Look for Coolibar (runs about $80–120, mostly one-pieces and tankinis), Mott50 (prints, cutouts, retro vibes), and J.Crew (their UPF line actually looks like normal swimsuits). Even Target’s Kona Sol line has a handful of UPF 50+ suits that don’t scream “sun safety.”

The trade-off is that you won’t find a ton of variety. The “cute” UPF suits sell out fast, and the colors are usually muted or solid. But if you want something that doesn’t look like you’re about to paddle out, that’s your best bet.

Just don’t confuse SPF (sunscreen rating) with UPF (fabric rating). You want UPF 50+ for the fabric to do the work. The suit itself won’t have SPF; that’s what sunscreen is for.
