Sunlight beats any scrubber for turmeric stains.

Sunlight is the real fix for a turmeric-stained plastic lunch box, and if you’re tired of fighting the yellow, glass or stainless steel won’t stain in the first place.

Turmeric stains plastic because curcumin — the yellow pigment — seeps into tiny pores and then oxidizes, basically setting like a dye. Scrubbing is the worst thing you can do. Every scratch gives the pigment even more surface to grab onto, so the box gets worse every time you attack it.

The fix is two steps. Soak the container in warm water with an oxygen bleach like OxiClean or a denture tablet. If you don’t have those, a baking soda paste works. Then leave it in direct sunlight for a few hours. UV light actually breaks down curcumin. It sounds like a Pinterest trick, but it’s real chemistry and it works.

As for materials: glass, stainless steel, and glazed ceramic are non-porous, so turmeric doesn’t soak in and can’t set. Even “stain resistant” plastics like Tritan handle it better than regular polypropylene, but they’re still not glass. If you pack a curry or sauce-heavy lunch every day, switch to glass. It’s heavier, but you’ll stop doing turmeric archaeology on your Tupperware.
