Sunlight beats curry smell every time

The fastest fix for a plastic lunch box that smells like last week’s curry is a baking soda soak followed by direct sunlight.

The soak is easy: warm water plus a few tablespoons of baking soda, let it sit for an hour or overnight. That handles most smells on its own. But the step everyone skips is the sun. Leave the box outside or on a sunny windowsill for a few hours — UV light actually breaks down the odor molecules trapped in the plastic. It works embarrassingly well.

For garlic specifically, make a thick baking soda paste and scrub the inside before the soak. White vinegar on a paper towel also works as a quick wipe-down. Avoid bleach — it can degrade the plastic and sometimes makes the smell worse by reacting with leftover oils.

One honest caveat: plastic is porous, and old scratched-up containers are sometimes beyond saving. If you’ve done the soak and the sun and it still smells, that box is done. Replace it.

Your sandwich doesn’t want to taste like Tuesday’s curry.
