Sunlight is the secret to stink-free lunch boxes

Baking soda gets the credit, but direct sunlight is what actually kills the lingering smells in plastic lunch boxes.

Plastic is porous, and hot food pushes odor molecules into those microscopic pores. That’s why washing alone never fully fixes it. The two-step that works:

Coat the inside with a baking soda paste (water + baking soda, thick like toothpaste) and let it sit overnight. Rinse it out. Then put the container in direct sun for a few hours. UV light breaks down the odor molecules. This is not a myth — it genuinely works.

If it’s overcast, do a vinegar soak instead: one part white vinegar to three parts water, overnight. It won’t smell like vinegar once you rinse it.

And a prevention note: don’t microwave in plastic or run it through the dishwasher if you can help it. Heat sets those smells in permanently.
