Sunlight kills lunchbox smells faster than any cleaner

Sunlight is the best trick for getting fish or onion smells out of a plastic lunch box. Wash it normally, then leave it in direct sun for a few hours. The UV rays actually break down the odor molecules that soap can’t touch.

Washing alone fails because the smell soaks into microscopic pores in the plastic, and most cleaners just mask it. Baking soda helps absorb lingering odors — sprinkle some in, close the lid, let it sit overnight. Worth trying before you give up and buy a new container.

If you’re in a hurry, white vinegar is your next best bet. Soak the box in a 1:3 vinegar to water mix for 30 minutes, rinse well, air dry. Don’t bother with lemon juice as a substitute; it’s weaker and can leave its own scent.

One warning: don’t scrub hard with abrasive pads. Every scratch you make becomes a new home for smells. Use a soft sponge, and make sure the box is completely dry before you put it away.
